The Misfit Boys – “The Shutdown”

.

The lyrics to “The Shutdown” were written in 1923 by an anonymous steelworker in Cape Breton, Canada. However, there is no record remaining of the original music so Garry Leech wrote new music in 2011 and recorded the song with his band The Misfit Boys. Despite being penned almost 90 years ago, the lyrics remain eerily relevant today in the current context of global capitalism.

.

This speech written by Garry Leech that has been put to music addresses the gross global inequalities and injustices that exist under capitalist globalization and calls for a revolution to establish a more just and humane global alternative. For the full text of the speech, see “Let the Revolution Begin.”
